[ti:How Early Treatment Can Limit the Spread of HIV] [ar:Jim Tedder] [al:Health Report] [by:www.hxen.com] [00:00.00]如果您也喜欢 恒星英语学习网 www.hxen.com 请与您的朋友分享...This is the VOA Special English [00:02.81]Health Report. [00:04.62]For people infected with HIV, [00:07.85]the earlier they start treatment, [00:10.49]the better -- and better [00:12.99]not just for them. [00:14.28]A new study shows that [00:16.78]early treatment greatly [00:18.57]reduces the risk that [00:20.86]the partner of an infected person [00:23.05]will also get infected. [00:26.09]HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. [00:29.93]Dr. Anthony Fauci is [00:32.88]with the United States National [00:34.52]Institutes of Health [00:36.33]which paid for the study. [00:38.12]ANTHONY FAUCI: "Many studies [00:38.91]have been showing that [00:40.07]the earlier you start, [00:41.56]the better it is [00:42.46]for the person who is infected. [00:43.85]This study shows that [00:45.89]not only is it better [00:46.99]for the person who is infected, [00:48.48]but it helps that person [00:50.33]from transmitting to the person [00:52.68]that's their sexual partner, [00:54.42]heterosexual partner." [00:56.12]Researchers cannot say [00:58.06]if the results would be the same [01:00.00]in men who have sex with men. [01:03.29]Most of the couples [01:04.83]in the study were heterosexual. [01:07.67]The study took place [01:09.41]in Botswana, Brazil, India, [01:13.33]Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, [01:16.47]Thailand, [01:17.56]the United States and Zimbabwe. [01:20.85]It involved almost two thousand [01:23.65]couples divided into two groups. [01:27.35]In one group, the infected man [01:30.74]or woman began to take [01:32.94]a combination of three [01:34.73]antiretroviral drugs immediately [01:38.96]after being found to have HIV. [01:42.39]In the other group, [01:44.29]the infected partners began [01:46.47]drug treatment only when [01:48.52]they started to show [01:49.76]signs of getting AIDS. [01:52.45]The researchers say [01:54.84]both groups received [01:56.63]equal amounts of HIV-related [01:59.61]care and counseling. [02:01.90]That included information [02:04.11]about safe sex practices, [02:06.40]free condoms and regular HIV testing. [02:11.43]The study began in two thousand five. [02:14.81]It was supposed to last [02:17.00]until twenty-fifteen. [02:18.74]But researchers stopped it early [02:21.73]because the results were so clear. [02:24.57]Only one case of infection [02:28.30]was reported in couples [02:30.24]where the infected partner [02:32.33]began immediate treatment. [02:34.83]Dr. Fauci says earlier treatment [02:38.31]led to a ninety-six percent [02:40.35]reduction in the spread [02:42.30]of HIV to uninfected partners. [02:46.28]ANTHONY FAUCI: "This is a powerful [02:47.81]bit of evidence that will [02:50.39]go into the thinking and formulation [02:53.43]of guidelines and of global policy, [02:55.97]policy by WHO, by UNAIDS, [03:00.78]by the international organizations [03:02.73]that help to provide drugs [03:05.11]in the developing world." [03:06.91]The study shows the value [03:09.44]in testing and treating HIV [03:12.13]before a person even feels [03:14.83]sick enough to see a doctor. [03:16.97]But in many countries, [03:19.11]public health budgets [03:21.41]are already stretched thin. [03:23.40]In sub-Saharan Africa, [03:25.90]the area hardest hit by AIDS, [03:28.93]for every person [03:30.72]who gets treated, [03:31.57]two others go untreated. [03:34.16]Antiretroviral drugs [03:37.04]suppress the virus. [03:38.74]Once people start treatment, [03:41.17]they have to continue it daily [03:43.57]for the rest of their life. [03:46.31]And that's the VOA Special English [03:49.31]Health Report. [03:50.40]To read and listen [03:52.34]to our reports, [03:53.24]go to www.hxen.com.
