[ti:Study: Inequalities Make Poor More Likely to Die From COVID-19] [00:00.00]如果您也喜欢 恒星英语学习网 www.hxen.com 请与您的朋友分享... [00:00.04]Researchers from Imperial College London [00:04.24]say the chance of dying from COVID-19 rises with increasing poverty. [00:12.48]They blame inequalities in society in poor countries for the increased risk. [00:20.28]The coronavirus crisis continues to expand in many countries [00:25.72]that are considered lower-income or lower-middle-income, [00:30.80]such as India and Nigeria. [00:35.04]Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center [00:39.24]reports India, for example, [00:41.80]has recorded over 440,000 COVID-19 cases [00:47.88]and more than 14,000 deaths from the disease. [00:53.88]The Imperial College researchers say "health inequities" [00:58.32]mean that some groups are at greater risk. [01:02.56]Health inequities are unfair or avoidable differences in health [01:08.04]among different groups in society. [01:12.24]The report looks at such inequities based on three measures: [01:17.04]the availability of hand-washing places, [01:20.84]the ability to work from home and the ability to go to a hospital. [01:28.32]Peter Winskill was the lead writer of the report [01:32.28]and spoke to VOA over Skype earlier this month. [01:38.24]"We estimated on average a 32 percent increase [01:43.16]in the probability of death from COVID-19 [01:46.92]when comparing individuals from the poorest households [01:51.36]to those in the wealthiest households," he said. [01:55.68]The main reason for this, Winskill added, is a lack of the ability [02:01.04]to go to a hospital and intensive care centers at hospitals. [02:07.08]Poorer families also often live in larger households [02:11.64]that include several generations. [02:15.72]This makes it harder to protect [02:18.04]older family members through social distancing. [02:22.40]Other indirect effects of the health crisis also are harder [02:27.60]on poorer people, Winskill said. [02:30.76]He noted lockdown periods [02:33.52]during important agricultural periods of planting and harvesting. [02:40.20]The researcher said, "We also know from the data [02:43.96]that individuals in poorer households in these areas [02:48.56]also depend more on food grown themselves, [02:52.92]so there are serious food security issues." [02:57.00]In addition, COVID-19 has led to reduced health services for other diseases. [03:04.92]Winskill said the research shows that deaths from AIDS, [03:10.92]tuberculosis and malaria may increase over the next five years. [03:19.04]He said there may be an increase of up to 10 percent for AIDS, [03:24.04]20 percent for TB and 36 percent for malaria deaths [03:30.48]in areas with high level disease burden. [03:34.16]The report says existing patterns of inequality [03:40.32]mean the poorest are less able to protect themselves from infection. [03:46.20]The report's writers urge governments [03:50.04]to improve the availability of hand-washing [03:53.88]and strengthen community health services.
