[00:00.04]Visitors to Rome can now see one of the most important [00:07.40]private collections of ancient Greek and Roman marble sculptures. [00:14.68]The 90 works from the Torlonia Collection opened this week [00:21.88]in the newly rebuilt Palazzo Caffarelli, overlooking the Roman Forum. [00:30.20]Among the works is a marble fountain that was made in ancient Greece. [00:37.48]Experts on ancient Rome believe the fountain once stood in the garden [00:44.16]of the general and statesman Julius Caesar. [00:49.40]At the time, it was already hundreds of years old. [00:55.24]The 620-piece Torlonia collection is believed to be [01:01.68]the greatest private collection of classical art in the world. [01:08.16]It was begun more than a century ago by Prince Alessandro Torlonia. [01:15.72]He found many of the pieces on the grounds [01:20.00]of his family's Roman properties. [01:23.60]Wealthy from a business relationship with the Vatican, [01:28.48]the family purchased other well-known sculpture collections. [01:34.28]In 1884, the Prince built his own museum to show off his collection. [01:43.24]When the museum closed in 1976, the pieces went into storage. [01:52.04]"The reappearance of such a...collection is a very important event," [01:58.12]said art historian Salvatore Settis. [02:02.92]"When I saw them for the first time it was very emotional [02:08.24]because I knew most of those pieces from books, [02:12.36]but I had never seen them." [02:15.12]The Torlonia family chose Settis to help [02:19.68]with the difficult job of deciding [02:22.64]which works should be shown to the public. [02:27.04]Anna Maria Carruba helped prepare the statues for the show. [02:33.88]"Many of these pieces were already restored from (the year) 1600 onwards. [02:41.12]We didn't need to work on the structure of the statues [02:45.60]but only on the surfaces, cleaning them," she said. [02:50.52]Italy's culture minister Dario Franceschini [02:55.80]says the works "take your breath away." [02:59.20]He spoke to reporters on Monday. [03:02.36]He added that it was unfortunate that COVID-19 safety restrictions [03:09.12]would limit the number of people who can visit. [03:12.92]The show will stay open until June 29, 2021. [03:20.08]It is the result of public and private cooperation [03:24.64]among the culture ministry, the city of Rome, [03:29.12]the Torlonia Foundation and the Roman jeweler Bvlgari. [03:35.24]Show organizers said there had been plans [03:38.92]to bring the artworks to other countries, [03:42.48]but the coronavirus pandemic has left those plans uncertain.
